Curate Cohesive Group Coaching Programs

The application process

Before your group even begins, it's necessary reflect on who the perfect group members are. What are their characteristics? How will they show up in the group?

It can be extremely tempting to accept anyone who is ready to pay into your group program. However, doing so is a missed opportunity to create commitment, buy-in and cohesion in your group.

Your first step when you begin to build the group is to vet each participants by asking them to answer specific questions. This serves as a first filter: if someone is prepared to spend time intentionally thinking about what they want to gain from the experience, you will know that they are truly interested.

We suggest creating a written application form that covers the following areas:

  • What do they want to gain from the experience? What are their goals?
  • What have they learned from previous group experiences?
  • What type of learner are they?
  • What are their pet peeves in a group?
  • What topics do they want to cover?
  • Are they prepared to spend the time and energy necessary to show up powerfully for themselves and others?
  • Are they prepared to be challenged out of their comfort zone? This is by no means an exhaustive list and it will be a great start.

Getting to know your applicants

Once people have applied, in order to ensure you bring together a group of participants who have varied perspectives, bring a unique point of view and will gel and grow together in the most productive way, we encourage you to have a pre-registration call with each of them.

During the call, you might bring up a point that caught your attention in their application form, or you might check with them that a previous experience they shared will not impede them from having an open-mind. Use all the information you gathered in their application form to have an open, transparent and bold conversation.

If you'd like some ideas on what to cover during pre-registration call, download the "pre-registration call" handout we share with the Group Coaching HQ Certification Program participants.

Happy group curating!
